I Am the Light of the World

I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life. (John 8:12)

We live in a world dark with sin. Unless the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit causes one to be born again, man is enslaved to this darkness. Jesus frequently referred to Himself as the Light, but those who are in darkness hate the Light.

For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. (John 3:20)

What does it mean that Jesus is the Light of the world? The Light of the world shines on the darkness of men’s souls and reveals their need for a Savior. Jesus reveals the truth about God and men.

When we believe upon Christ and trust in his atoning, sacrificial death, we are freed from the bondage and darkness of sin.

I have come as Light into the world, so that everyone who believes in Me will not remain in darkness. (John 12:46)

Those who believe upon Christ will follow Him by walking according to His Word. This language of being "in the light" is used throughout the New Testament as a description of the believer’s new manner of life.

…for you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light… (Ephesians 5:8)

...for you are all sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of darkness; (1 Thessalonians 5:5)

...but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. (1 John 1:7)

There is only one remedy for spiritual darkness and only one way to cause the blackness of sin and death to flee. Jesus promised that those who follow Him “will have the Light of life.”

Are you walking in this saving Light?
