I Am the Way, the Truth, and the Life

I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me. (John 14:6)

As the gospel of John develops, Jesus progressively reveals Himself to His disciples, especially through His “I AM” statements. He has affirmed that He is the great I AM of the Old Testament—He is God incarnate.

He alone saves and sustains our souls. He alone gives life. He alone is the way to salvation.

In John 14, Jesus speaks to His disciples on the eve of His death. With Judas gone, Jesus seeks to console His remaining disciples as they come to understand that He is leaving them.

In verse 2, Jesus says that He will be leaving to prepare a place for them. No doubt the thought of Christ leaving caused despair among His followers, but He quickly offers a promise of comfort:

If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also. (John 14:3)

How may one be assured that Christ will come for him? By believing upon and following the only true way to salvation, that is, Jesus Christ.

When Jesus says that He is “the way, and the truth, and the life,” He is reaffirming all that He has preached up to this point. He is the Bread of Life, nourishing souls unto salvation. He is the Light of the World, the only means by which man can see his need for a Savior. He is the door, the only path to salvation. He is the Good Shepherd, the only one who will lead His own to eternal life. He is the resurrection and the life, the only one with the power to give true life.

Jesus Christ is the only way to God, He is the full and comprehensive truth about God, and He gives the very life of God.

Jesus Christ alone is the only name under heaven by which men can be saved (Acts 4:12).
